Mooting competitions and legal clinics

Mooting competitions
Student teams of the Maastricht law faculty keep scoring high at international mooting competitions. During such mooting competitions, student teams work intensively on a hypothetical case. The format of the mooting competitions differ depending on whether they simulate a law office environment (client consultation competitions) or a court or arbitration environment (moot court competitions).

A client consultation competition simulates a law office consultation in which law students, acting as attorneys, are presented with a client matter. They conduct an interview with a person playing the role of the client and then explain how they would proceed further in the hypothetical situation.

In moot court competitions, student teams work intensively on a hypothetical court case, prepare written submissions, and finally plead on behalf of their parties against other universities in front of benches of judges or law professor.

Legal clinics
Bringing reality in the classroom enhances student employability. We established two clinical education programmes that offer live-client or other real-life practice, reaching out to NGOs who need help in problem-solving and community-building.

Participation in mooting competitions and legal clinics is extracurricular, no credits are granted within the programme

Participation in mooting competitions and legal clinics is always subject to multiple variables. Check the student portal for more information on application and deadlines
